Reality: season one! / mid-range porcelain, ceramic decals, wood shelves / ©2018

A single banner headline from each day’s New York Times – beginning January 20, 2017 and ending on January 19, 2018 – is emblazoned onto an individual coffee mug. 365 mugs occupy 13 sets of shelves, arranged by calendar months. With each passing month, mugs diminish in size (Dimensions vary). From a handmade, oversized prototype, a mold was made. The cast clay object shrank with firing, and a new mold was made from the slightly smaller object. And so on, successively smaller!
In this way, the work also refers to the process & material properties of clay.

cupola / Used plastic bags, tape, electric fans / ©2019 / SEE VIDEO DOCUMENTATION

Created while in residence at Budapest Art Factory, July 2019. This work is loosely inspired – very loosely inspired – by the dome of Szent István Bazilika in Budapest. In particular, the inside of my dome refers to the wildly ornate interior space of the Bazilika. Whereas the actual cupola of Szent István Bazilika was created in the rich, Neo-Renaissance style, my version utilizes the most ubiquitous material of the 21st century: Plastic. Artworks of any given time period are a reflection of the cultural values and the dominant modes of representation of that time. It is hard to dispute that the material with which we surround ourselves currently – at home, at work, at the market – is plastic, above all. Many thanks to the artists and staff of BAF for the opportunity and for making me feel welcome. Many thanks to all those who contributed plastic bags for the project. Special thanks to BAF intern, Leila Pashaeva, without whose assistance I could not have made the work.

Based on Noam Chomsky's ideas regarding the "propaganda model" of corporate- sponsored news media, in particular the New York Times, "the place where people will go to find out what happened...Therefore it’s extremely important if history is going to be shaped in an appropriate way, that certain things appear, certain things not appear, certain questions be asked, other questions be ignored, and that issues be framed in a particular fashion."
